This number will only grow as Ra is no longer allowed on newer models in the European Union and will be banned from newer models in the United States by With this refrigerant being in such high demand I have found very little information about it.
There seemed to be a scattering and mish mash of data from various websites across the internet. My goal here with this post is to give the most comprehensive and complete guide to all of the facts, questions, and points of note on yf. Knowing the pressure and the temperatures associated to the machine you are working on is essential to being able to diagnose any possible issues. Without knowing the temperatures you are more or less walking blind. These pressure checks give you the facts so that you can move onto the next step of your diagnosis.

If you are familiar with a repairs then you should be just fine with YF repairs as well. That being said there are a few points that I want to make to you before we move on to the next section:. We have gone over the requirements to service yf but now we need to cover what kind of tools that you will need.
Like with most new technology comes new tools. As I have said throughout this article there is a numerous list of automotive manufacturers that have already begun using the new yf refrigerant. I may miss some here but I aim to show you some of the manufacturers that are currently using the new HFO refrigerant. This data is from and a make list does not necessarily mean that all of their models are using yf. These are all huge names in the car industry and while not all of their models are covered under YF I feel that it is only a matter of time before they all make the switch.
So, when did all of this start? Back then all automotive applications were using the CFC R refrigerant for their air conditioning. Ever since then it and R had gained and gained in popularity until they were practically found everywhere across the country and the world. When vented or leaked the refrigerant would drift up and into the atmosphere. Eventually it got so bad that a thinning of the Ozone layer began to form over the Arctic.
This treaty was enacted in countries all over the world.
Compressor oil and refrigerant: Mixing old and new
The first target was CFC refrigerants such as R In R was phased out of the automotive market in the United States and was replaced with the newer HFC refrigerant known as Ra. Ra had the benefit of not containing Chlorine so with its usage there would be no danger to the Ozone layer. Lo and behold there was found to be another problem with Ra.
Instead of the Ozone layer issue we now had a new issue called Global Warming Potential. Global Warming Potential, or GWP, is a measurement of how much heat a greenhouse gas can trap in the atmosphere. This is our standard. Quite the difference here folks. We can now begin to see why a substitute for a was needed as well. The problem was discovered and companies along with governments began to look for an alternative solution to Ra and to other HFC refrigerants that were currently on the market as early as Automotive air conditioning compressors require specific types of lubricants.
If the wrong type of compressor oil or the wrong viscosity compressor oil is used, it may damage the compressor. PAO Polyalphaolefin oil can sometimes be used as a substitute for certain PAG oils if the compressor manufacturer approves it. This can lead to poor lubrication and premature compressor failure. Universal compressor oils should NOT be used in Ryf applications. The following is a list of recommended lubricants by compressor manufacturer.
A low oil level can starve the compressor for oil and lead to compressor failure. Too much oil can hurt cooling performance. Our advice is this: Why take a chance using a universal oil when you can just as easily use the correct PAG oil? Every compressor manufacturer I've ever interviewed says the same thing: Uuse the specific type of oil specified for their compressor.
In most cases, it is some type of PAG oil. If an oil is used that does not meet those requirements fairly closely, it might cause wear and friction issues. Eventually, this could cause the compressor to fail. You should not intermix different viscosities because the viscosity of the mixture may be "out of range" for the appliction for a number of reasons. Thicker oils are typically specified for heavier bearing and seal loads, but also require slightly greater bearing clearances.
If a thinner oil is used, it may not provide adequate lubrication. Likewise, an application that specifies a thinner oil to minimize friction and drag may not receive adequate lubrication if a thicker viscosity oil is used.
The universal oil will be a compromise blend that fails to meet anyof the OEM specifications. It will be too thick for some applications, and too thin for other applications. A universal oil may work okay in some compressors, but not others. So why take a chance? The reason why some people promote universal oils is because it is simplier for auto parts stores and shops to stock a single type of oil instead of a number of different oils.As new models are redesigned or introduced, they will have Ryf with POE oil.
The POE oil that is required for this system on Honda vehicles is not the same oil that is required for hybrids. As always, check the vehicle labels for the correct refrigerant and oil before starting any work on the system. This change in refrigerant is also due to the EPA announcement in July that Ra will be banned in new vehicles for use in the U.

So, according to this rather "rough" consideration, one would expect that Ryf molecule should in general be more slanted to instability also during operation inside a vapour compression unit where the olefinic bond can be attacked by several substances in circulation.
This assumption is often present in the bloggers discussion in several web sites, but cannot be considered correct. The actual question is to have a clear scenario of the rather complex possible interactions of the refrigerant with the lubricant and all the other materials present inside a refrigeration circuit.
